Who would have thought New York’s 23rd District would be all the rage in election circles?   An area that has voted “mainly” Republican (except Liberal Bastion St. Lawrence County) since the Civil War is now up for grabs by a Democrat!   Many “far right” activists including Sarah Palin and Dick Army have got involved in a fight to politically destroy the Republican Nominee Dede Scozzafava for not being a good enough Republican.

Using such rhetoric as “party purism” and evoking Ronald Reagan (I guess since we are close to Halloween the veil is thinner and the dead may have more strength)  Republicans are willing to concede the election to a Democrat to force Republican party candidates to be part of the far right.   However, in an op-ed by Pat Buchanan the new republicans do not even know what they stand for or their message on many of the issues that are currently facing the country.   Buchanan states that only 20% of the country views themselves as Republican, but 40% are self confessed conservatives.   Also, Buchanan fails to mention that 60% of the country does not see itself as “conservative”.

Are we beginning to see “the right” pretty much eat themselves alive in order to preserve conservative purity?    The best thing for the Republicans to begin to attract independents (and quit summoning the spirit of a dead man), would be to stand up for issues that Independents care about — including health care and gay rights.   Unfortunately, the only platform the seem to stand on is – tax reduction.  I guess they are willing to let the country slide into the ditch to save $20.00 at the end of the year on their taxes.   I guess that will feed a whole lot of families — go figure!  When will the “lower middle class right” understand that its not about their $20 bucks savings, its about catering to the Corporations and ultra rich — who pay no taxes because of corporate loopholes.  Then again, I guess it has been Corporations First!
